Clearly, I went M.I.A.

Wow first off, I must apologize to all of the people that have been writing comments on my site. I’ve been rather preoccupied with my work lately that I haven’t had the time to even think about what was going on with my site. I started reading through some of them, but I figured the best thing I could do was to post something more recent, and I promise I’ll get around to reading the rest!

So for those who aren’t too familiar with me personally, here’s what’s been going on. At the end of November 2010, I was hired to work at a new local game studio (for now, I will keep it unnamed). It was a very ambitious place with a CEO who had many visions that could easily get the company to stand out, so it certainly seemed like a place I could easily adapt and grow with, especially since it was just starting up. We had some hurdles to get over for some projects that most of the team wasn’t thrilled with in order to get to the more exciting ones (console games, yeah!), but we were more than willing to make it work. Well, a few months down the road, we had the first hurdle conquered, or so we thought. There are more details I would love to reveal as to what happened next, but lets just say that for confidentiality sake, things took a turn for the worse. Shortly after the incident, we attempted to save the company with a different project, but the first hurdle we thought we conquered kept coming back and asking for more things to be done to try and impress other companies that we could partner with to help us get back on our feet. The moral of the story with trying to get work with other companies: be sure to get a contract that will ensure you get paid even for demo pieces. Needless to say, because my team wasn’t working on the business end of things, we didn’t have that done because unfortunately, the people who were running the business end were completely new to it and also didn’t have enough knowledge of the game industry to know that even with demo pieces it is crucial to get a contract. So after a few miscellaneous projects of trying to get us partnered with other companies, we didn’t get anywhere with that and ended up wasting more time that could have been devoted towards the new project we developed to try to save the company. I feel this is getting lengthy, so I’ll try to wrap this up. A few months after that, including some time (notice I said some and not all) spent towards the new project, we have found ourselves in a situation of a make or break situation within the company. I have to say, managing the business end of a game company can be rather disheartening and stressful, especially when things don’t go as planned. So this next week is pretty crucial as to where I’ll be or will be heading.

Despite the crazy situation that has been going on the past few months, I still have high hopes that one way or another things will work out. I will be spending some time after this post updating things, perhaps even going back and tackling the project I originally started before all of this craziness. All in all, the experience is something I will never forget, and if anything, the most important thing I’ve learned is that it doesn’t matter who or what status a person or company has, get a contract for any work you do, even if it is just a demo piece.

It’s been a while…

On November 18, 2010, in News, Projects, by ajiacat

It’s certainly been a while since I last posted anything, so it’s about time I gave an update. I’ve added the finalized concept and a render of the first level of the iPhone game project that fell through with a client. I figured I could still showcase what I was able to accomplish before the project was shut down. The game pitch was similar to the idea of the game “Paper Toss” but instead it’s a paper plane. I won’t get into details though in case it turns into something usable later on.

As for current projects, I’m in final testing stages for the latest iPhone game project I am working with my classmate/partner on. Due to licensing, I was only able to work on art assets, everything from the GUI to modeling and texturing. Still looking forward to being able to script more so I can get better at it, as well as having a better understanding and knowledge base.

My other personal side project has been an on and off ordeal. I’ve certainly fine tuned the original idea but I’m still working on the specifics for the background story for it before tackling more art. Of course that doesn’t stop me from scribbling ideas, but that’s not for viewing. ;)

That’s it for now, I think that just about brings things up to speed.

Here We Go Again

Well after about a month of effort being put towards the potential contract game, the project was killed.

But in other news!… Working independently with a classmate to try and get some projects knocked out. Here’s to the next few projects!

Project On Hold

On July 30, 2010, in News, Projects, by ajiacat

So the past week I have been working on concepts for a potential contract project, and forced me to push my project off to the side for the time being. I spent quite a few hours working on an environment piece to give the feel of the game yesterday and some of this morning, and seems to have paid off thus far. Only thing left in question is the licensing, which is pending on the distributor’s response on if it can be an independent license or if it needs to be the business’s license.

Depending on how things pan out, I may or may not post the concepts/environment.

Huzzah!

Well after a big of testing with themes I’ve settled on this one, and also had to figure out why the sidebar was acting up but it looks like it should stay in place now. So for now, my site is part blog, mostly for the sake of me staying focused on my project instead of getting distracted by my site not feeling right.

Speaking of my latest project… It’s been an on and off situation lately with inspiration jumping in and out at random. I’ve gotten some concepts laid out but nothing has been finalized yet. And it seems like I’ve decided to put my writing hat on to help fill in the blanks for the details of the project. So in other words, I’m all over the place with this one but at least I’ve restrained myself to staying in the concept phase until I’ve decided that I have finalized pieces before moving into 3D.

Change in Plans

On July 22, 2010, in News, by ajiacat

So I’ve decided that instead of a typical site, I’d stick with a blog format until I can get around to building my ideal flash site. Going to take some time to get everything set up properly though.
